The Power in Believing

Have you ever heard the term mind over matter? Of course you have. Who hasn’t? The history, according to Wikipedia, shows that this phrase started in the 1960’s/1970’s (Wikipedia reference) and was based on paranormal phenomena. Growing up I can tell you I heard this used for matters not paranormal related but just the ability to encourage yourself to push yourself a little further – a heightened sense of believe in yourself.

When my Mom got sick, over two decades ago, the doctors ran a plethora of tests on her. She was even used as a two legged lab rat for research since her condition was so unusual. After several tests they determined she had Cerebellum Atrophy but the cause eluded all the medical practitioners she encountered.  I’ll put this in as simplified explanation as possible leading up to a point that is relevant, so bear with me here.

The cerebellum is basically the heart of your body’s communication system. Anything that happens to your body sends a message to your brain and the brain then responds. The cerebellum, located between your brain and spin, is the moderator of all these messages. The connective tissue are arteries. What often times happens to stroke patients is that the brain becomes damaged thus messages coming from the brain to the body take time for the cerebellum to interpret before passing it along. My Mom never had a stroke. So it was not a brain issue. Sometimes when a person is in a bad accident the body is damaged, let’s say the arm got crushed, all the message coming from that arm will be a little slower until the cerebellum can interpret the new signals. My Mom did not have any accidents.

The atrophy portion of her diagnosis relates to when an artery starts to shrink. This happens in a person’s body when they are lacking oxygen (such as in many stroke victims) or use (if a person is in a coma to long and the cerebellum is not being utilized, or an arm, leg, brain, etc.). My Mom, again, did not have  a stroke and there were no other signs of oxygen deficiency to the brain or cerebellum. And when this illness came on she was employed full time at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, CA., thus her brain was fully active.

So how could she suffer such an illness when medically she had none of the symptoms that would lead to this problem?

My Mom’s “life” was at an all time mess! She was highly erratic in her behavior because she was fighting extreme depression. Her husband had two major heart attacks in the course of 3 years. One lead to a triple bypass and the other an angioplasty procedure. Both times he recuperated at his sisters house but after the second incident he told his wife of 35 years he was not coming home. Her children were all growing up and moving on with their lives. And her bottom fell out of her cup. She stopped believing in herself, in God, and in life.

The power of positive thinking is beyond most people’s comprehension. Have you ever meet a person that was so incredibly negative you think the best thing for them is to find peace in God’s heaven? Then you realize they are so full of piss and vinegar they’ll probably never die? I have. My Mom being one of them, but I guess everyone eventually goes home.

BELIEVE!

I believe today will be a good day because God made it.
{Psalm 118:24} This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

How are you honoring God if you are finding the flaws in each day? Though, as humans, we have feelings and will cater to those, and God will forgive us as long as we continue to be honorable. It is in these feelings we have choices too. We can chose to remember that God gave us this day to live. We can chose to celebrate the fact we are having a bad day or we can leave our spirit to be festered in the pits of the bad day and disregard the Lord’s gift. It is a choice you are given and with each day that you sleep and the next you rise you honor God and his gifts. Believe that today will be as good as it can be. Believe God gave you this gift.

I believe I have all I need to accomplish His purpose in my life.
{2 Peter 1:3} According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto
life and godliness, through the

knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue

Be humble in our wants. Believe that God has given you what you need, as a parent shall give a child what they need, but it is up to us to find a way to satisfy our wants through means that are not of greed, and dishonoring, but of pure intentions. It is okay to have wants, to have desires, it is in the reasons why and the means with which you obtain them that you should remember your honor to God.

I believe nothing is too difficult for me because nothing is impossible for the God who lives in me.
{Philippians 4:13} I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Everyone has those “moments” in life where we question if God is really with us. We ask why we are suffering so much and how can we be better servants to him to make our pain and suffering dissipate. If you must ask than you are not believing in God, nor in yourself. Believe that God has not left you. Believe that you have served God well and know that you are honest of intent and actions. Then you can walk forward knowing that the struggles are not against you but about those who are casting the stones. Find peace in your heart for them, forgiveness in your gestures, and believe that when the gates of heaven open for you that God will receive you.

I believe even the biggest challenges in my life can be redeemed for my good and His glory.
{Romans 8:28} And we know that all things work together for good to them that
love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose

Again, it is easy to lose sight of the gift that life brings through the darkest and most trying of struggles. In the media there are those that have experienced tragedy – Caylee Anthony, Amy Winehouse, Leiby Kletzky and others. The families will receive grandiose outpouring of love and support. They will face their biggest challenges without ever being alone. It is here that most people believe the power of God does his best work. What about the small, home town “heros” that face these struggles without stardom? Millions of people face struggles daily and have only their faith to pull them through. What happens when the struggles start to out weigh their faith? Who will be there to pick them up and help them move forward? Why not make it you? You can change a complete strangers life by taking just a moment to touch God’s glory in your heart and hand it to another.

I believe I am loved just as I am and called to become even more like Jesus every day.
{Hebrews 10:14} For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified

Believing in yourself is believing that God knew what he was doing when he created you. For years my son has wanted to be tall, grow as everyone else his age. I have said these words to him since he was a small child, “God gave you the body he gave you and there is nothing you can do to change your body. So be proud of who you are and know that God made you this way because he knew you could handle it.” There are elements to each of us we can change and then there are elements that are given to us, by God, because he believes in our ability to handle it. Honor God in self love not loathing. Honor his creation, you, by care and concern, but never forget others along your path of sanctity.

I believe that He isn’t finished with me yet and is able to complete the good work begun in me.
{Philippians 1:6} Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun
a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ

Every person you meet will not only impact your life but you will impact theirs. God has given this gift to people. He trusts his children to walk forth into the world and use this gift for the greater good – caring, giving, loving, hope. He expects you to receive such gifts but when you do not it’s okay to continue to walk forward knowing that he has done good work within you and you will continue to show His good work by honoring His values, His wisdom, and His direction.

I believe that nothing that is crafted to do me harm can in any way affect the outcome of God’s Plan for me.
{Isaiah 54:17} No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that
shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the
servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

The terrorist bomber can take your life. The rude neighbor can take your life. The drunk driver can take your life. The IRS can take your life. But none of them will alter God’s plan for you. None of them will take your life from God as long as you believe. These are human factors and not all humans believe in God’s plan, but if you do, and if you walk proud in your belief of God than none of these people will win in the war over who controls your life. There will be struggles, and there will be days of questioning, resignation, but when you wake the next day stop and thank God for another chance to do Him proud, and yourself. Teach your children to not lose sight of the glory in the life that God has given them and teach them how to overcome the obstacles that can easily tear a person down because ultimately God has a plan for their life.

I believe that when God speaks that settles it and His word shall never fail.
{Isaiah 55:10-13} For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither,
but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish
that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace:
the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the
LORD for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

I believe every word of the Bible is God’s and inspired.
{2 Timothy 3:16-17} All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof,
for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

I believe I am an over comer, more than a conqueror, and nothing will keep God from carrying out His plans!
{Romans 8:32-39} He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him alsofreely give us all things?
Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.
Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long, we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1. I believe every Word of God is true and He is true to His Word. If I may repeat some of Beth Moore’s affirmations…I Am who the Word of God says I Am; I Can do what the word of God says I can; I BELIEVE GOD. Thanks for sharing and may the grace of God be yours today and always.
