If there is ever an example of “love thy neighbor,” the recent story in Chicago is it. An elderly couple was found buried under mounds of trash in their home, after lying there for three weeks.
News reports stated this couple had taken “hoarding to a new level.” I realize this is an illness / disorder and that maybe people with this condition shy away from “helpful” neighbors and friends. But wasn’t there anyone who could have checked on this couple?
The elderly man had a sister in the area, but she had not been in contact with him for almost two years. Thank goodness for the woman who finally did call the police to conduct a “well-being check.”
I guess it’s a good reminder to us all to be on friendly terms with our neighbors so that we will notice when something unusual happens, or to check on our elderly neighbors in times of extreme heat or cold.
