A recent news article on Sphere.com told of the efforts of Merry Hyatt to bring Christmas carols back to California school children. She said she is “tired of working in schools where students aren’t allowed to sing Christmas songs that are religious in nature. It’s sad and it’s wrong to have a Christmas party and not mention Jesus. It’s his birthday.”
While there is no law in California prohibiting carols in public schools, most schools find it simpler to exclude all religious materials.
Ms. Hyatt is sponsoring a ballot initiative that would require all California public schools to give children the opportunity to sing or listen to Christmas carols. She needs to collect 433,971 signatures by March 29th to bring her measure to the statewide ballot.
